Mathias has stumbled across an old article on Britannica’s CD/DVD technology platform, which is based upon a great deal of open source Java technology.

  1. which is based upon a great deal of open source Java technology.

Wouldn’t it be great if EBI followed the example of the giants it is standing on by releasing their source code unter a free license? :) AFAIK, EBIs business modell relies on the value of the content, not the IR software.

  2. Actually, EB has made signficant contributions to open source projects, notably Apache (Britannica employs several committers to the Apache Software Foundation, and a couple of members) and the Axion databse project (which was founded by and for quite some time primarily developed by Britannica)

  3. Thanks for the info. I was unable to find anything on eb.com about this, except this press release

This year’s competition recognized “companies that demonstrate the resourceful use of technology and related assets in a tough economic climate.” Britannica’s selection follows recent efforts by the company, a pioneer in electronic publishing, to streamline its technology operations and reduce costs through better integration, realignment and the use of open-source software.

Of course, there are other sites on the net and the debian mailing lists which document EBIs involvement at least in parts.
